Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable for book's unread age,and particularly internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults described that prevent a higher grading.Despite them,it really is an exceptional copy for brightness and cleanliness.
A series of eight novels and one short story. It incorporates themes from multiple genres, including dark fantasy,sci-fi,horror,and Westerns.Describes a "gunslinger" and his quest toward a tower, the nature of which is both physical and metaphorical. The whole series, and its use of the Dark Tower, expands upon King's multiverse, linking together many of his other novels,as the series progresses.
Along his journey to the Dark Tower,Roland meets a great number of friends and enemies. For most of the way,he is accompanied by a group of people who, together with him, form the Ka-tet of the Nieneteen and Ninety-nine,consisting of Jake Chambers,Eddie Dean,Susannah Dean, and Oy.Among his many enemies on the way are The Man in Black,Morderd, and The Crimson King.
The story continues directly from the end of 'Song of Susannah.' Roland Deschain finally reaches The Dark Tower, but getting there is a wonder in itself,a bleak and often tragic tale with King pulling no punches,as the small band of warriors find their destinies.
Inspired by the poem 'Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came' by Robert Browning and whose complete text is included in this final volume's appendix.
Each book in the series was originally published in hardback with a number of full-colour illustrations spread throughout. Each book contained works by a single illustrator only. Subsequent printings of each book in trade p/back form usually preserve the illustrations in full,EXCEPT for books I ('The Gunslinger.') and IV ('Wizard and Glass.') Note that the pocket-size p/back reprints only contain b/w chapter or section head-piece illustrations.
Michael Whelan is the only recurring 'Dark Tower' illustrator, his illustrations for 'The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger' (1981) are amongst his early, notable works. He was to return more than 20 years later,to illustrate this final volume.
He has received numerous awards including the HUGO (World Science Fiction) Award (fourteen times) and the HOWARD (World Fantasy) Award.
